When searching for the right place to live, start a family, or begin a new career there are many important characteristics and details that need to be taken into account before making the big move. Safety of a particular city should be at the top of your priority list and most heavily weighted factor when coming to a final decision for your new home.
Recently, the city of Novi, Michigan made the list for the 50 safest cities in Michigan, according to safewise.com. Rankings were determined by examining FBI crime statistics, both violent and property crimes, for all cities in Michigan with populations larger than 10,000 residents.
Coming in at #30 on the list, Novi provides its 50,000 residents with all the amenities of a large city, while still maintaining a small, close knit, community kind of feel which makes it the perfect spot for raising a family. In addition to having all of the services and amenities of a city this size, Novi also maintains over 1,000 acres of parkland that are perfect for those who love the outdoors.

“Fat bikes,” as they are called due to their large balloon tires, are gaining popularity in Michigan for summer and winter adventures.
Just before the New Year, British adventurer, Maria Leijerstam broke two world records by becoming the first person to bicycle to the South Pole, and making the 500 mile trip in a record 10 days.
Helping enable this expedition was the use of a three-wheel, recumbent trike, fitted with fat tires.
Fat bikes are easy to ride, almost like riding on beach balls. The large tires are not sluggish and difficult to pedal as one might think from looking at them. They nicely bounce and roll over snow and sand.
As the sport has grown, so have the opportunities to ride one of these bikes. A number of shops in Southeast Michigan offer rentals. Trails Edge bike shop in Milford has year round weekly rides, and a 7 bike fleet available to rent for $10 each.
Northern Michigan resorts, shops and parks have ramped up their fat bike offerings this season.
Try something new next time you’re Up North. Chrystal Mountain is well-equipped for fat bikes, it has a 6 mile trail, and bikes to rent for $10 per hour.

Snowy Owl photo by Ryan Schain
Birds and ducks that spend the summer in Michigan go a relatively long distance for a warmer climate during the winter. But for Arctic Snowy Owls, Michigan is their warmer weather, believe it or not. Typically these birds do not travel even this far south, however every number of years they migrate to our area in higher numbers.
With the help of volunteers, the website eBird.org is able to track and record yearly sightings throughout the U.S. and Canada. eBird also offers a user-friendly map to view sightings in our area and across the continent. Some entries include photos of the sightings.
Anyone can register and submit their bird sightings in the area. Good luck finding a Snowy Owl. You never know what else you might see!
