Birds and ducks that spend the summer in Michigan go a relatively long distance for a warmer climate during the winter. But for Arctic Snowy Owls, Michigan is their warmer weather, believe it or not. Typically these birds do not travel even this far south, however every number of years they migrate to our area in higher numbers.
With the help of volunteers, the website eBird.org is able to track and record yearly sightings throughout the U.S. and Canada. eBird also offers a user-friendly map to view sightings in our area and across the continent. Some entries include photos of the sightings.
Anyone can register and submit their bird sightings in the area. Good luck finding a Snowy Owl. You never know what else you might see!
